Chapter Eight

Elaine was surprised to see Maxine already at the restaurant when she arrived. Much to

her dismay, a glance at her watch confirmed that she was late rather than Maxine being

early. Elaine fluffed up the back of her stil damp hair. Taking a shower with Cheryl this

morning would've been an excellent idea had they not spent so much time necking under the

spray. Elaine could almost feel her body glow whenever she thought about Cheryl. If she

had to, she'd be able to function for months on memory alone after last night.

"I thought I had the wrong restaurant," Maxine said. "I've never beat you here before."

"I got held up," Elaine said.

"Are you okay? You look different this morning."

"I'm fine," Elaine said. "I've been —"

"Wait until you hear what happened to me last night," Maxine said. She had a gleam in her eye that alerted Elaine to an upcoming tale of sexual adventure, but the waitress pouring

coffee and taking their orders momentarily interrupted them. "Betina has a friend who

works at Sea World," Maxine said once the waitress had gone. "Have you listened to the news this morning? Did you see the headlines in the paper?"

Elaine shook her head. Cheryl had been the only thing on her mind.

"We were there when Baby Shamu was born last night!" Maxine exclaimed. "It was

incredible!"

"Baby Shamu? The whale? You're kidding, right? That's what has you this excited?"

"It was a media event," Maxine said, a bit miffed at Elaine's lack of enthusiasm. "We had special badges and everything."

"Special badges. Wow." Elaine laughed. Jesus, I feel good this morning. "I'm relieved to know that you two can go out in public and keep your clothes on when you have to. That's

great."

Maxine raised an eyebrow and smirked. "I haven't finished my story yet, Dr. Marcaluso.

While everyone else was at the baby shower afterward, my little Betina and I christened

Shamu Stadium. The acoustics there are fabulous, by the way. It was a titil ating

experience, as they say."

"Shamu Stadium? You and Betina in—"

"Shamu Stadium," Maxine finished for her. "She had me right there in the wet zone, honey.

Front row center. It was out of this world."

"It's called the splash zone, not the wet zone," Elaine reminded her.

"Trust me on this one, Dr. Marcaluso. It was the wet zone by the time we finished with it."

Maxine slowly ran the tip of her tongue over her glossy top lip and shook her head. "I go to work every day just so I can get some rest, I tell you." She picked up her coffee cup. "So.

How are things with you? Has there been any progress on the Cheryl Trinidad front, so to

speak?"

Elaine leaned back against the booth and smiled at her. "We made love last night," she said quietly.

"You what!" Maxine yelped. She set her cup down, spilling a large majority of its contents all over the saucer. "Did you really?"

Elaine nodded.

"Why'd you let me go on and on about that stupid fish? Tell me everything, and don't leave

out a word."
